We’re shining a light on a few small business owners from our official UCF  alumni Business Directory ! Meet alumni Jennifer ’79 and Jeff Dodds ’80, owners of Top-Drawer Consignments:

What inspired you to start this business?

The store was originally opened in 1995 by retired Disney Vice President Dick Nunis, who is also one of the past Chairmen of the UCF Board of Directors, along with his wife Mary and their good friend Fred Rodgers. Last April we were able to take ownership of the business.

What is the best part about running your own company?

The people part. Each day is a new adventure. Each client has a different story and needs. We have many regulars that come in each week, and our team is a blast. We are a diverse group ranging from young UCF students to nearly 80-year-old retired folks.

What is your mission statement or goal?

“Do the best job you can with the job you are given to do. Those who look over the hill never climb the mountain.”   -Richard A. Nunis

What was the biggest thing you learned during your time as a Knight that you apply to your life today?

Treat everyone nice & give back!

How has the pandemic affected your business?

As it began our business slowed. On March 20, 2020 we were informed we had to close. We had no idea how this would affect our staff. On May 4th we were able to reopen, and the majority of our team was able to return to work. Like many businesses we took all the required precautions like, masks, wiping things down, social distancing and plexiglass shields at our checkout areas. Thankfully, our clients have been very understanding during this challenging period.

Why is it important to support small business owners?

Small business is the backbone of America. While many are able to order just about anything these days online (including Top Drawer), there is still a great feeling being able to support your neighbors or other small businesses.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

We intend to grow! We have a solid base of customers. We are also beginning to bring in new lines such as Uttermost, Classic Home, Regina Andrew, Four Hands, Alder & Tweed and others. We want to become known as the local spot to come select your furniture, art, accessories and women’s fashion.
