Five Things Alumni Need to Know This Week - July 22, 2019

1. June 30 marked the end of IGNITE: The Campaign for UCF, an historic fundraising initiative that spanned eight years and aimed to raise $500 million for the university. The campaign total will be announced publicly at a celebratory event in October, but in the meantime one thing is clear: The success of UCF is being built by loyal Knights like our alumni and we’re just really proud to call you our team. Michael Morsberger, CEO of the UCF Foundation, said, “Our alumni and friends have made this success possible. There is an excitement, an energy here at UCF that ignites people’s interest and support of this great university. As for the campaign total, I can say it is not a question of if we reached our goal, but rather by how much we surpassed it.”

2. Last week, we told you all about the College of Medicine’s current offer for us to support future doctors through white coat sponsorship for the class of 2023. Since we talked to you last, 82 coats have been sponsored out of 120 students! That means there are only 38 coats left that need to be sponsored. Each sponsored coat will have a note in the pocket with the name of the donor that helped to make someone’s first moment as a medical student memorable. This is a great opportunity to provide a tangible gesture of support for UCF students who will go on to join the medical field. Get your details and commit to sponsorship right here.

3. Football season is right around the corner and the hype is building and it is real and we are just really excited to hit the ground running with another phenomenal year of football. According to the American Athletic Conference’s 2019 preseason media poll, we have been selected as the favorite to win the championship title. Again. The fourth American Athletic Conference Football Championship game won’t be played until December, but get ready now for the season opened against Florida A&M, Thursday, August 29.

4. Commencements are right around the corner and today it was announced that 3/3 of the summer 2019 commencement speakers are alumni. Pretty rad that these UCF graduates would come back to spur on our most recent additions to the alumni family. Looking for your very own chance to get involved on the other side of graduation. OK, here ya go. Get involved.

5. "Space university – who wouldn’t want to go there? The same year that the United States’ Apollo 8 mission first sent humans to orbit the moon, the University of Central Florida, aka “space university” opened its doors for classes and, like the universe, has been expanding the limits of human knowledge ever since.”

UCF Today took a look back and a look forward at UCF’s role in America’s space program and how that role has evolved since 1968. Check it out here.
