John Seegers ’05

Tell us a little about yourself!

Born in NJ. Moved to Florida at age 20 in 1975. Built a career in the Central Florida hospitality industry.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Around 10 years old, I tried to write a short story about dinosaurs. When I published my memoir about walking the Camino de Santiago, I realized my dream.

What’s your writing process? What inspires your writing?

For my memoirs, I dictated thoughts onto my phone, then put it all together when I returned. For fiction, I know how I want to start a story and how I want it to end the story. After that, I fill in the middle with my ideas and lately, brainstorming with AI to help outline my thoughts.

What are you currently working on right now?

I am working on a follow-up novel to Billy: A ’70s Story. The first novel was written memoir style by an elderly man looking back at his life as an eighteen-year-old college student raised in a hostile foster system. He finds his way and family with the help of an elderly woman. The new novel is about his life after retirement and a stranger that enters his life.
