Bruce Pauley, UCF Professor Emeritus, Pens “Portrait of a City”

Bruce Pauley, UCF professor emeritus of history, is the author of “Portrait of a City,” his newest book in which he highlights his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, during a period of rapid social and technological change between the 1890s and 1920s. Pauley examines a multitude of important aspects of daily life, including the modernization of homes, public and private transportation, education, the status of women, and entertainment. He also addresses the challenges of life during this time, like the loss of civil liberties during World War I.
Even though Pauley retired from UCF in 2010, his passion for bringing history alive for students and faculty continues through an endowment he and his wife, Marianne, established in 1999. Pauley received the President’s Trust award in 2004 for his generous philanthropic support.
Each spring, the UCF History Endowment Fund provides resources for the Pauley Lecture Series on Global Affairs that invites engaging speakers to share their perspectives with students. The fund also provides opportunities for history faculty to travel outside the US.
Pauley is one of the most highly respected and renowned experts on Austria in the United States. During his many years of teaching and research, he has made significant contributions toward promoting research on the history of Austria, completing six scholarly books on the subject. In 2010, Dr. Christian Prosl, Austrian Ambassador to the United States, presented to Professor Pauley the Austrian Cross of Honor for Letters and the Arts 1st Class.
He also represented Austrian Studies on innumerable panels and committees, and he has served as advisor to the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
