Meet one of our Knight Authors: Drew Mims ’08

Tell us a little about yourself!

I’m a UCF graduate with a lifelong passion for storytelling, travel, and meaningful connections. My professional journey has taken me through sales, technology, and travel but writing has always been where I find purpose. I’ve authored Mimsy’s Whimsy World, a series of children’s books that inspire imagination and courage. I’ve also developed The Travel Manifest, a travel planner that serves as a powerful guide to manifesting your dream adventures.

My time at UCF taught me the value of curiosity and community, both of which have shaped my creative work and my approach to life. Whether I’m writing a story to spark wonder in children or helping others see the world through a new lens, my goal is always to leave people feeling inspired, seen, and empowered to explore.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think I’ve always been a storyteller at heart. As a kid, I loved imagining worlds and putting them on paper, but I didn’t fully commit until the birth of my daughter. I wanted to create something that would be her legacy and mirror adventurers like us.

What’s your writing process? What inspires your writing?

My writing process usually starts with a feeling — a spark of curiosity, a memory, or a question I can’t shake. Travel inspires much of my work; every journey introduces me to new stories, cultures, and perspectives that shape how I see the world. I try to weave those experiences into my writing so that readers not only see new places, but also feel them.

What was the biggest thing you learned during your time as a Knight that you apply to your life today?

Being a Knight taught me to lead with optimism, stay adaptable, and find creative solutions no matter the challenge. It also reminded me that success isn’t just about what you achieve, but how you uplift others along the way. Those values still guide my work and my writing today.

What was a class or club at UCF that helped you grow as a writer?

Oddly enough, a class that really helped me grow as a writer was Psychology with Dr. Brophy. That course opened my eyes to how people think, feel, and connect. These lessons continue to shape the way I write today.

Who are some of your favorite authors or books?

Oh, the places you’ll go – Dr. Seuss and The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

If UCF had a time machine, what moment on campus would you go back to?
