Meet Jana Piragic ’07 ’09MA!

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Jana Piragic (Mitchell) and I am a wife, mother, author, adjunct professor, and speech-language pathologist. Originally from Minnesota, I came to UCF on a volleyball scholarship, where I was a four-year letter winner and served as team captain for two years. Orlando and the UCF campus became like a second home for me. I’m passionate about writing and consider myself a lifelong learner. These days, my family is my top priority, but I also enjoy playing tennis, practicing yoga, and living a healthy lifestyle.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Writing has become an unexpected but fulfilling career path. I am incredibly grateful to have found a way to pursue it alongside my other roles. Writing has been a creative outlet for me since childhood and I’m thrilled that it now plays such a significant part in my life. Through writing I have found this opportunity to explore and share stories that inspire and connect people.

What’s your writing process? What inspires your writing?

I’m always thinking about the project that I’m working on, even when I’m not actively writing. I’m constantly rephrasing ideas, exploring different perspectives, and refining the core message I want to convey. For children’s literature, my inspiration comes from a desire to teach valuable lessons and help build positivity in young readers. In UCF Knight in Training, the main character is a child determined to become a UCF Knight. He embodies bravery and perseverance, never giving up – qualities that reflect the true spirit of a UCF Knight.

What was a class or club at UCF that helped you grow as a writer?

The most impactful course I took at UCF in relation to my children’s writing was Preschool Language Disorders. It taught me the importance of reading to children – not just for language development but also for strengthening the parent-child bond, encouraging creativity, and fostering a love of reading from a young age.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

I admire Michelle Meadows for her rhythmic writing and uplifting tone and Anna Dewdney for her playful yet meaningful storytelling. I strive to bring these qualities to my own writing.

What else?! What are you currently working on right now?

I’m currently a contributing editor for The Scout Guide, where I write new articles each month. This role allows me to explore fresh topics and connect with local business leaders. It keeps my writing diverse and dynamic, which I find incredibly stimulating and rewarding.
