Lisa Heath ’12

Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi, I’m Lisa! I’m an author, public speaker, and lifelong learner. I’m also a proud University of Central Florida alum. I’ve learned that faith and a good laugh can get you through almost anything. It took me ten years to finish college, and the reason why is a story in itself. I did earn my master’s in business and leadership. Then I had a life-changing moment of clarity. It set me on my path as an author and advocate. I’m passionate about psychology and how the brain works. I love digging into research for my books and for my own recovery. My healing journey after a traumatic brain injury showed me how many resources were missing. I’m currently working on a way to help. My book is Life of Lisa: Overcoming Adversity with Love and Laughter. As an adoptee and caregiver, I wrote it to explore family, identity, caregiving, and the messiness of life. My hope is that readers feel seen, understood, and encouraged. The sequel is on its way! When I’m not writing or speaking, I’m usually helping my dad with his latest project, often in the garden. I’m also happy anywhere there are dogs. I spend time with mine and look after other families’ fur babies too. I love to travel. If I’m off the grid, I’m probably on another adventure. As I like to say, “Wheels up and ready to go!”

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember. When I told my best friend I was writing a book, she said, “I always knew you would. You’ve loved writing since we met in junior high.” Writing my books lets me combine my love of storytelling with my love of research.

What’s your writing process? What inspires your writing?

What’s your writing process? I do my best writing away from home in a quiet environment. Traveling helps me get the space I need to focus. Before I start, I plot my books with a loose outline and a general idea of where the story is going. Then I write straight from my head and my heart. Once the words are on the page, I use my outline to polish the draft. What inspires your writing? Strong emotions inspire me. When I feel something deeply, I want to put it into words.

What was the biggest thing you learned during your time as a Knight that you apply to your life today?

That’s easy! At UCF, I learned that when I put into action what’s in my head, I achieve the goals I set. I did it then, and I still do it today.

What was a class or club at UCF that helped you grow as a writer?

Two things helped me grow as a writer at UCF. The first was Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity. The second was being part of the Burnett Honors College, where I wrote an undergraduate thesis

If UCF had a time machine, what moment on campus would you go back to?

I’d go back to Relay for Life. Phi Sigma Pi takes part in it every year. One year, I picked up my mother and we attended the cancer survivor dinner together, since we were both in remission from the same cancer. That night was special. She only came to UCF twice: that night and my graduation. My mom passed away in early March of this year, and I’m so grateful for that memory.

What are you currently working on right now?

I was in the middle of writing a book when my mom passed away. During my time of grieving, I realized that book needed to wait. Right now, I’m working on the sequel to Life of Lisa.
