Small Business Spotlight: Joshua Johns ’12
To kick off Small Business Saturday, happening on November 26, we’re shining a light on a few small business owners from our official UCF Alumni Business Directory! Meet alumnus Joshua Johns ’12, owner of Icy Knights, LLC.
Icy Knights is a mobile, Hawaiian-style shaved ice company serving in Central Florida and beyond. They do all sorts of events throughout the year! Everything from sporting events to big festivals to smaller neighborhood gatherings and weddings.
What inspired you to start this business?
As a first-generation graduate, I strive daily to break the cycle of the poverty mindset that plagued my community. From the time I was a young boy, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur because it would enable me to live a better life and leave a legacy for my family.
What is the best part about running your own company?
Getting the opportunity to empower my team daily and engage with the community, while serving our customers delicious shaved ice.
What is your mission statement or goal?
Our mission at Icy Knights is to deliver a great product, amazing customer service and foster a growth-mindset for our team members with integrity and a smile.
What was the biggest thing you learned during your time as a Knight that you apply to your life today?
I learned that the only way to know if it will work is to “fail fast, fail forward and fail often.”
Why did you sign up for the Knights Network Business Directory?
I strongly believe in community. I love the mission of UCF Alumni and want to stay connected with fellow Knights. Joining was a no-brainer! I want to be in the know on how to better serve my community and continue UCF traditions!
I am also happy to have the opportunity to partner with UCF this season at the UCF Alumni Football Tailgates!
Why is it important to support small business owners?
Supporting small businesses is crucial. It allows for innovative businesses to continue to provide quality and sustainable products. More importantly, I feel it stimulates the local economy and culture by creating job opportunities and gathering places.
Most small business owners are easily accessible and will go above and beyond to please customers while promoting a sense of belonging, which is so valuable within a community.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I see Icy Knights expanding to more brick-and-mortar locations as well as offering a more diverse line of products.
